This report looks into the benefits and methods for increasing construction contractors involvement in the design phase to capitalise on their construction knowledge.

Summary

The design process of building projects has the ability to take on more feedback and help from construction contractors. By allowing this input from construction contractors in the design phases, issues in construction due to design can be avoided earlier, saving time and money. However, input from construction contractors in the design phase has generally been rudimentary and needs to be improved.

This report looks into the benefits and methods for increasing construction contractors involvement in the design phase to capitalise on their construction knowledge. The report states that it is important that the right information is made available to the design team at the proper point in time and that the information is of an appropriate level of detail so that it can be beneficial.

The report introduces and discusses the Conceptual Product/Process matrix model (CPPMM) which is a model which organises constructability knowledge based on appropriate level of detail and timing input during the project. A detailed case study using CPPMM is provided, showing how it can be of benefit to providing improved input of constructability knowledge on projects.
