This section contains articles that present the business cases for sustainability. They explore the rationale for why individuals and companies should make decisions in favour of sustainability when owning, developing, designing, building, occupying, or managing commercial buildings.
Summary
Supporters of sustainable commercial buildings are often challenged to justify their motivations to their board or executive management, clients, customers and agents. This justification is often sought because of widespread perceptions that sustainable buildings cost more, hold inherent risks due to the innovation involved, and do not add to portfolio value. Due to the infancy of many sustainable commercial buildings, the supporters' case is often weakened by a lack of documented evidence related to the performance of sustainable buildings.
This section, and indeed the Your Building website, begins to address these concerns and to provide the evidence that is required. It presents the business cases for sustainability - the rationale for why individuals and companies should make decisions in favour of sustainability when owning, developing, designing, building, occupying, or managing commercial buildings. In doing so, it addresses both profit performance and value, and the broader additional indirect and/or intangible benefits that accrue through factoring sustainability into decision making.
The benefits sought by, and accruing to, each industry stakeholder group are different. The business case for each group is presented in the business case articles for owners, occupiers, developers, builders, designers and facility managers.
