The first stage of Sydney’s low carbon energy network, comprised within the Green Square development, has been awarded funding under the Federal Government’s Liveable Cities program.
Cogent, owned by Origin, has entered an agreement with City of Sydney to build Sydney’s low carbon energy network.
Cogent will provide trigeneration services to Council and privately owned buildings in four ‘low carbon zones’ across central Sydney – Green Square, CBD north (which includes Martin Place and George Street), CBD south (which includes the Town Hall precinct), and Pyrmont & Broadway.
City of Sydney’s interim trigeneration plan estimates a total capacity of 360 megawatts by 2030, at a cost of $440 million, supplying 70 percent of the local government area’s electricity requirements.
Origin will invest $100 million over 10 years for initial stages of the project.
“This local energy network could save NSW electricity consumers as much as $1.5 billion by 2030 in avoided or delayed spending on electricity grid upgrades and new power stations,” Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore says.
Work has already started on the Green Square development, with demolition of the Royal South Sydney Hospital underway. A trigeneration energy system and purification plant for a recycled water system will be installed at the hospital site.
City of Sydney will receive a $3.75 million Federal Government grant, under the Liveable Cities program, to go toward installation of the trigeneration network at Green Square.
The Green Square trigeneration network is a four megawatt energy system. It will supply electricity, heating and cooling to more than 3000 houses, shops and office buildings in the locale.
Planning proposals have been submitted to City of Sydney for the Green Square Town Centre, which are awaiting approval from the NSW Department of Planning.
