GPT’s Charlestown Square development, which includes Australia’s first retail solar thermal plant, won two awards at the International Council of Shopping Centres’ Asia Pacific Awards.
GPT took out a ‘gold’ award for sustainable design, and a ‘silver’ award for development and design. Charlestown Square is located 6km south of Newcastle in NSW.
According to GPT, the judges noted the redevelopment’s minimisation of ongoing environmental impact, and its focus on the community in its design.
Charlestown Square’s sustainable features include:
Australia’s first retail solar thermal plant to power air-conditioning
Two natural gas-fired high voltage electricity generators that generate the majority of electricity for on-site use
Motorised louvers in the food terrace to create natural cross-ventilation
More than 80 percent of waste diverted from landfill
Rainwater tanks for amenities flushing, cooling towers and irrigation systems
